#234 Parma

We chose Parma as our base location for exploring Northern Italy. We had plans to spend one day exploring Parma them make three different day trips to nearby towns. We ended up spending three full days in Parms - mostly because we kept getting information from the airline that my missing suitcase was going to be delivered at any moment ! The bag arrived at 5:30 PM on our third day in Parma, and finally I can be comfortable again. This is the first time an airline has lost my bag and I found it to be very difficult and troublesome. Next time I am packing for a long trip, I will definitely think twice and stop to imagine what I would do if the checked bag disappeared.

The upside of the missing suitcase was that we have had a very enjoyable three days in Parma. Parma is a 2000 year old city founded during the Roman empire. Parma is, of course, world famous for Parmegiano-Reggiano cheese as well as Prosciutto ham. Everyplace we ate in Parma served outstanding food and great wine. The city has fantastic historic buildings and stone streets along with a 600 year old cathedral. The streets are filled with life and packed with pedestrians, bicyclists, and tiny cars. We really got to feel what it was like to live in a neighborhood in Parma and it is wonderful.

Above you can see us enjoying a water break at the cafe in the Parco Ducale. The next pictures show the exterior and interior of the Parma cathedral or Duomo. Parma is sited on the banks of the Po River. Apparently Italy is suffering from a severe drought at the moment because the Po river is completely dry. Next are some street scenes including a shot of the family with our Opel rental car. Every corner you turn in Parma is a fabulous scene of history and beauty. Finally you can see the kids behind the counter of a Formaggieria or cheese shop helping the owner slice some Parmesan cheese

I have uploaded some more pictures with captions at snapfish.com. Please have a look.
