The next chapter in our Asian travel chronicles continues this week with a five day trip to Hong Kong. We arrived on Wednesday afternoon and stay until Sunday. This week is the Mid-Autumn Festival and Chinese national holiday commemorating the 60th anniversary of the communist revolution. October 1st marks the day that Mao threw out the nationalists and launched the People's Republic of China.
Our first day was spent at Disneyland Hong Kong in a celebration of American capitalism and imperialism. The kids have never been to Disney in America (well, Juliana went to Disneyland in Los Angeles when she was 2 years old) and they had the best day of their lives with Mickey, Woody, Snow White, and others.
The weather was sunny and beautiful and the park was remarkably not too crowded. We heard that most Chinese stayed home on Thursday morning to watch the nationally televised parade in Tiananmen Square. The lines were short to non-existent. Juliana, Joseph, and Marco loved Space Mountain and we actually rode it six times, looping around four times in forty minutes near the end of the day.
Maria hated Space Mountain but she loved the princesses and the castle. She got to meet Snow White but proved to be a bit shy when it came to asking for her autograph. She was also a bit young for the special Halloween haunted house. Interesting thing was that we had a twentysomething Chinese woman behind us in the haunted house. She screamed and cried hysterically the whole time and was much more upset by the fright house than five year old Maria. Very strange indeed.
