#235 Venice

I have a bit of catching up to do on the blog. Two technical barriers had to be conquered to get back to blogging. First, I had the wrong plug converters for the Italy electric outlets. Second, the Vodaphone air card I bought in Parma did not work in Assisi, so I was offline for the duration in Assisi (details coming up).

My lost bag thankfully finally arrived on Tuesday afternoon (three full days after our arrival). On Wednesday we packed up and left Parma to visit Venice. It turned out to be quite a long drive from Parma to Venice - almost four hours and our plan was to drive another 600 km in the afternoon to Assisi, so our visit to Venice had to be quite brief.

Nonetheless, Venice is a magical place with canals instead of streets and multicolored houses that are hundreds and hundreds of years old. We did the big three tourist activities - St. Mark's Square, the Rialto Bridge, and a gondola ride. For me, the gondola ride was a highlight. It was very expensive (90 Euro for 30 min for all six Cazzatos) but it was a perfect way to see the city. We also enjoyed the company of our gondolier who has lived in Venice his whole life and who's father was also a gondolier. He told us that he once visited America and stayed at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. He declined to take a gondola ride in Vegas.

Kathleen loved Venice and enjoyed our brief time there. She thought be a great romantic place for a honeymoon. It wasn't so romantic with four sweaty children. I have a few more pictures of Venice at Snapfish.com.
