On Day 11 of our trip, we left Rome in the morning and drove to the Naples area. Our first stop was Pompeii. Juliana had studied the destruction of Pompeii this year in school and suggested that we should visit here.
Pompeii was a Roman town of about 10,000 people that was destroyed suddenly in 79 AD when nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted and covered the town with 20 meters of hot ash. The place is remarkable. The volcanic ash provided an effective encapsulation of the town and the city remained buried until the 1700s. The streets and buildings are preserved just as they existed on the day of the eruption.
We only spent a couple of hours in Pompeii as it was very hot and we were on our way to Sorrento. One could easily have spent a whole day in Pompeii and in some of the other nearby excavation sites.
