#238 Rome

Kathleen's parents, Don and Margie arrived in Rome on Saturday (Day 8) to join the family vacation. They will be with us for the next half of the Italy adventure. With eight people, we needed to rent a second car, so now we have a motorcade to move us around. Kathleen is driving the second car and she started off the Rome leg of the trip by running over a parked motor scooter in front of our hotel.

We have three days and three nights in Rome and are seeing all of the recommended sights - the Pantheon, the Vatican, St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistene Chapel, the Colloseum, the Roman Forum, the Bridge of the Angels, and others. One particular highlight was our climb to the roof of St. Peter's Basilica - over 700 steps for Marco and I who skipped the elevator. It was still more than 300 steps for the rest of our group that took the elevator. We are also eating lots of good food and spending lots of Euros.

Kathleen's parents are visiting Rome for the first time and we are very excited for them especailly to see the Catholic sights of Rome. Margie has worked for the Catholic Church in Kentucky and has written books on the the bible as literature (try googling Margaret Nutting Ralph) - but she has never been to Rome. She was very excited to see the Vatican and the Sistene Chapel as well as the many other places and people that we plan to visit.

Notes for others travelling to Rome - above you can see a photo of our guide, Debbie, who gave a very informative and entertaining tour of the Vatican Museum and Sistene Chapel. We also have an interesting tidbit to share about our accomodations. To s
ave money with our party of eight, we are staying in a monastery in downtown Rome near the train station. It is a place called Domus Nova Bethum and it is run by nuns whose mission is to show hospitality to travelers and pilgrims. The cost is less than half of a regular hotel room in Rome and they have family rooms to accomodate four children comfortably. If you are ever in Rome and looking for affordable, no frills accomodations, this place is worth checking out. Breakfast is great too.

I have posted more pictures at Snapfish.com. Please check them out.

Seems Cathleen is lucky it wasn't China. Somebody would have fell on the ground and laid there until money started flowing.

Hi! My name is Vicky Holland and I work for Dr. Don Ralph. He told me to check out the Cazzato family blog and I'm glad I did. You have a beautiful family and it looks like the family had a great time together. Italy is a very beautiful place - hope to visit there some day!
